To get you in the Sunday spirit (we know, it’s a little early), we’re giving you an exclusive, behind-the-scenes peek at our recent interview with Birdman Randy and The Ivory Street Preachers. A regular fixture at our Sunday Social sessions, these guys are incredibly talented... and hilarious!
Tell us a bit about yourself? Where did it all start?
Birdman Randy & The Ivory Street Preachers started as an unnamed band playing in the corner of a chicken restaurant. Every Saturday night we would set up our stuff and play music to people eating their chicken chippies, trying to get them to hang around, buy more chips and drink tins. I have audio recordings from that time and I can confirm we were not good. But they kept on asking us back every Saturday. The restaurant turned into a nightclub and we became the house band of the club. We got up every Saturday for 5 years and just got in the hours. Covid hit and we transitioned to bigger and better things so if anyone needs their car washed, please email us bookings@buttermint.com.au.
How long have you been playing together?
6 years? 7 years maybe? I don't know. Time is a flat circle. It all blurs into one long never-ending version of Daryl Braithwaite The Horses.
Is there a particular style of music that you tend to gravitate towards?
Yeah, for sure! One of Birdman's strengths is our versatility. We pride ourselves on playing both kinds of music. Country and Western.
What do you love most about playing a Sunday Social session at River Quay Green?
Playing music outdoors. Breeze in your hair, feeling like Nicholas Cage in Con Air. We play lots of dank pubs. Sticky floors. Stops the children from running around like a fly trap. So it's a real treat to be playing music in the open air.
Do you have any words of advice for someone trying to break into the industry?
Team up with talented people you love and support each other. Whether you're writing / releasing original music or doing what we do as glorified karaoke singers, the magic is in the fleeting moments on stage and the crazy things you do together.
